Header
The Header of GW Drupal websites provides a space to present the university logo and/or to identify the site owner. It also provides a search box for website visitors and, depending on which theme is in use, some institutional links or a call-to-action button link.
The Editorial theme uses a content type called Main Header to manage the site header.
It has a white background and contains:
- the GW monogram alongside the logo or typeset name of the site owner
- or just the GW monogram or the university's stacked logo, if appropriate
- an optional, customizable call-to-action button link
- optional Utility Links against a buff background
Managing the Main Header
The Main Header consists of preset text fields and an image uploader.
- Hover over My Workbench > My Content > All Recent Content
- Click on All Recent Content
- On the next page, filter by Type > Main Header, and then click the Apply button
You should be presented with results of all existing Main Headers in your website, although there should only be one. As only one Main Header can display at a time, and multiple instances create administrative confusion, we recommend deleting unused instances.
If you do not see any results, filter further by Published > Any. If you still do not see any results, you may not be a Site Administrator in the website. In that case, you will need to contact the main website administrator for your office, department, school or college for further assistance.
- Under the Actions column, click Edit
- Upload your official logo and enter your office's formal name in the Alternate Text field
- one will be provided per the Signature System defined in GW's Visual Identity Standards & Guidelines
- The Logo URL should be the homepage of your website and does not need to open in a new window
- In the optional Call to Action Link Title field, enter a specific, active task a user can take (ex: Apply)
- Type or paste in a corresponding webpage link in the Call to Action URL field
- If the link is not on your website, check the Open URL in a New Window checkbox
- If desired, in the Utility Links field, type in the title of an existing set of Utility Links
- Drupal will show you results matching your title
- Select the appropriate set
- The Site Placement tag should be "Home"
- Leave all other fields as is or blank
- Under Publishing Options, change the Moderation State to Published
- Click the Save button
Your Main Header should now be updated, and all pages of your website should display your updates.
The Classic theme uses a content type called Header to manage the site header.
It is the top section of the website with the dark blue background and contains:
- the GW logo, which links to the main university website
- the site search box
- flyout menus with high-profile and institutional links
- these are managed by the Digital Marketing & Strategy team in Marketing & Creative Services
- optional image links to social media
Standard Header
School Variant
Some of the schools and colleges have opted to customize the Header with their logo replacing the main GW portrait and stacked logo, and with customized flyout menus with school-specific links, such as all of their academic departments and programs.
Note: for Columbian College of Arts & Sciences (CCAS) websites, only CCAS' Office of Technology Services can edit the Header.
Managing the Header
- Hover over My Workbench > My Content > All Recent Content
- Click on All Recent Content
- On the next page, filter by Type > Header, and then click the Apply button
You should be presented with results of any existing Headers in your website, although there should only be one. As only one Header can display at a time, and multiple instances create administrative confusion, we recommend deleting unused instances.
If you do not see any results, filter further by Published > Any. If you still do not see any results, you may not be a Site Administrator in the website. In that case, you will need to contact the main website administrator for your office, department, school or college for further assistance.
- Under the Actions column, click Edit
- Do not replace the university's official portrait logo with your departmental/administrative logo
- Only GW's official portrait logo or your school's official logo should display in the logo space
- The alternate text should be, "George Washington's profile next to The George Washington University" or your school's formal name
- The logo URL should be the main university website address or your school's main website website
- Only GW's official portrait logo or your school's official logo should display in the logo space
- Reference any pre-existing Social content types by name in the Social Links section
- The Site Placement tag should be "Home"
- Leave all other fields as is or blank
- Under Publishing Options, change the Moderation State to Published
- Click the Save button
Your Header should now be updated, and all pages of your website should display your updates.
